George Washington Hockley
George Washington Hockley hailed from Philadelphia, where he was born in 1802. While working in Washington, D.C., in the 1820s, he became a protegé of Sam Houston. He moved to Tennessee to work with Houston when the latter became governor, then followed Houston to Mexican Texas. He served as Houston’s chief-of-staff during the Texas Revolution, commanding artillery at the Battle of San Jacinto. In late 1836, Houston sent him to the United States, not only to accompany Santa Anna and Almonte, but to look into procurement of weapons for the Texas Army.
